Kerala turmoil persists amid tunnel probe and Congress rift
Overview
The post‑election crisis in Kerala has widened. The Enforcement Directorate summoned Veena Vijayan for a second interrogation and asked the High Court to cancel bail for Harish Kumar, the ninth accused in the May 27 attack on ED officials. Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan faced criticism over excise cuts on low‑alcohol drinks and a proposed stake sale of Adani Vizhinjam Port to MSC, prompting an emergency Congress meeting. CPI(M) leader V. Sivankutty blamed new central labour codes for the lay‑offs of 850 IT‑coding staff and called for protests, while Labour Minister Bindhu Krishna halted the cuts. A mudslide at the under‑construction Kalladi Phase 3 tunnel in Wayanad on July 7 killed six migrant workers; the death toll later rose to eight after the body of construction manager Vikram Rana was recovered. The Kerala High Court ordered ex‑gratia payments, free medical treatment and placed relief costs on the contractor. The state formed two expert panels – a five‑member committee to investigate the collapse and a three‑member team to advise on safe soil removal – both to submit findings within a month. Compensation of Rs 5 lakh per deceased family and up to Rs 2 lakh for injured persons was announced, and traffic restrictions remain on the Meppadi‑Chooralmala road while debris removal begins. On July 17, Satheesan left the stage without meeting Kerala Students Union (KSU) president Aloysius Xavier, sparking an intra‑Congress dispute. Party leaders, including KC Venugopal, urged the grievance be settled internally, warning that public dissent could weaken the state government. A July 18 High Court report, filed by an amicus curiae, concluded the Wayanad landslip was foreseeable. Five written warnings from the District Disaster Management Authority and the district administration to the Kerala Public Works Department and the contractor had been ignored.
