Congress Proposes Bill to Block College Coaches Leaving Midseason After Lane Kiffin's LSU Hire

A bipartisan bill titled the Protect College Sports Act has been introduced in the U.S. Congress. Sponsored by Republican Senator Ted Cruz of Texas and Democratic Senator Maria Cantwell of Washington, the legislation — informally called the “Lane Kiffin Rule” — would prohibit college coaches from departing their teams before a season ends and from being hired by another school while the current season is ongoing.

The proposal follows Lane Kiffin’s controversial move from Ole Miss to LSU, which sparked debate about mid‑season coaching changes. While the bill is still under discussion and far from becoming law, it signals growing congressional attention to governance of college athletics.

In parallel, LSU has reinforced its football staff by adding former head coach Ed Orgeron as a special assistant for recruiting and defense under Kiffin. Former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer praised Orgeron’s recruiting influence and defensive expertise during a recent podcast interview.
