Gabriel Esterelles has resigned as the Director General of Argentina's Congressional Budget Office (OPC), citing “personal reasons.” His departure comes just weeks before the National Executive Power is scheduled to submit the 2027 Budget project.

The resignation follows a period of tension regarding the technical autonomy of the agency. The Bicameral Commission of Parliamentary Supervision recently implemented measures that limit the OPC's independence, including a requirement that technical areas obtain political authorization before producing extraordinary reports.

These shifts occurred after the OPC released independent fiscal studies that contradicted Executive Branch estimates concerning university funding, disability, and pensions. Additionally, an internal audit prompted structural reforms, the removal of the Financial Administrative Service (SAF), and a freeze on hiring specialized personnel.

María Eugenia David Du Mutel de Pierrepont has been appointed as the interim director. A permanent replacement will be selected through a public competition as required by law.
