Conicet researchers develop rapid dengue diagnostic test
Researchers from Argentina's National Scientific and Technical Research Council (Conicet) are developing an innovative, low-cost rapid test for the early detection of dengue. Led by specialist Elisa Bolatti at the Institute of Molecular and Cellular Biology of Rosario (IBR), the project aims to create a diagnostic tool that can be used in emergency rooms and primary care centers across the country.
The method focuses on identifying the NS1 protein, a viral marker present in high concentrations during the first days of infection. Unlike traditional methods that rely on animal antibodies, this technology uses aptamers—synthetic sensors—which makes the production process simpler, more stable, and easier to scale. This approach is intended to reduce dependence on complex laboratory equipment like PCR during epidemic outbreaks.
The initiative involves collaboration between Conicet, the National University of Rosario (UNR), IBR, and the company DETx MOL S.A., with funding from the Williams Foundation to support national production. The research team is currently optimizing protein production for the four dengue virus serotypes and plans to adapt the platform for other viral diseases.
