Dengue diagnostic test development in Argentina

Researchers at Argentina’s National Scientific and Technical Research Council (Conicet) are developing a low-cost, rapid diagnostic test for the early detection of dengue. Led by specialist Elisa Bolatti at the Institute of Molecular and Cellular Biology of Rosario (IBR), the project utilizes synthetic sensors called aptamers to identify the NS1 protein, a viral marker present in high concentrations during the initial days of infection.

This technology aims to provide a simpler, more stable, and scalable alternative to traditional methods that rely on animal antibodies or complex laboratory equipment like PCR. The goal is to enable detection in emergency rooms and primary care centers to better manage epidemic outbreaks.

As development advances, health experts note that dengue risks persist even in colder months because Aedes aegypti eggs can remain viable in containers for several months. The research initiative involves collaboration between Conicet, the National University of Rosario, IBR, and DETx MOL S.A., with funding from the Williams Foundation.
