CONICET researchers lead marine and archaeological projects in Argentina
Researchers from CONICET are spearheading two distinct scientific initiatives in Argentina. In Chubut, a project in San José Gulf, Valdés Peninsula, aims to restore natural banks of the Tehuelche scallop. This species is vital for artisanal fishing and serves as an ecosystem engineer by helping form marine habitats. The project utilizes aquaculture techniques, such as collecting larvae from the water column, to support sustainable fishing practices.
In Catamarca, scientists are preparing for the “Expedición Inka 2026” at El Shincal de Quimivil, one of the most significant Inca settlements in the region. Scheduled for November 2026, the project will feature an interactive live stream to broadcast archaeological excavations in real time. The initiative, involving the National University of Catamarca and the National University of La Plata, seeks to showcase Inca political and ceremonial organization through the study of perimeter structures.
