Conservation efforts protect endangered turtle species in Mexico and Colombia

Conservation efforts for endangered turtle species are seeing significant milestones in Mexico and Colombia. In Punta Xen, Champotón, the Punta Xen Turtle Camp has protected over 1,500 Hawksbill turtle nests during the 2026 season. Activist Juan Aarón Chong Hong reported that more than 150,000 eggs have been safeguarded, with over 13,000 hatchlings released to date. The Grupo Ecologista Quelonios continues its volunteer work to prevent poaching and habitat destruction.

In Colombia, environmental leader Isabel Romero Gerez has been nominated for the 2026 Titanes Caracol Awards in the Environmental Sustainability category. Based in Puerto Triunfo, Romero has led a decade-long community project to protect the Podocnemis lewyana river turtle. Her initiative has resulted in the release of more than 16,000 hatchlings and involves collaboration with numerous schools, universities, and local families to promote biodiversity and responsible tourism.
