Sea turtle conservation in Central and South America

Overview

Sea turtle conservation initiatives continue across Central and South America, focusing on nest protection and hatchling survival. In Mexico, the San Martín Turtle Camp in Cozumel recorded 6,000 nests during the 2026 nesting season, resulting in the release of 6,915 hatchlings. In Punta Xen, Champotón, the Punta Xen Turtle Camp has seen a positive trend in Hawksbill turtle nesting. Activist Juan Aarón Chong Hong reported that more than 150,000 eggs have been safeguarded, with over 13,000 hatchlings released to date. Recent reports indicate volunteers have protected 1,554 nests this season, a significant increase compared to the same period last year, with recent rains aiding the discovery of new nests as the season nears its end in late October.

To bolster marine wildlife protection, the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas (Conanp) and the Oaxacan Fund for Nature Conservation conducted workshops at the Playa Escobilla Sanctuary. These sessions trained local communities in responding to sea turtle and marine mammal strandings, covering first aid, data collection, and coordination with authorities like Profepa.

In Panama, efforts remain concentrated in the Veraguas province, where organizations relocate nests to mitigate risks from looting and extreme temperatures. In Colombia, environmental leader Isabel Romero Gerez has been nominated for the 2026 Titanes Caracol Awards for her decade-long community project in Puerto Triunfo. Her initiative to protect the Podocnemis lewyana river turtle has resulted in the release of more than 16,000 hatchlings through collaboration with local schools, universities, and families. In Venezuela, coordinated actions continue to protect nests from human and animal interference.
