Romania political crisis intensifies amid investment drop and government deadlock

Romania faces a deepening political and economic crisis. Interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan has ruled out forming a new government with the Social Democratic Party (PSD), arguing that the party failed to respect previous governing agreements and would nullify recent political findings.

Amidst this deadlock, PSD Member of the European Parliament Mihai Tudose suggested that the party is open to negotiating political projects with the AUR party to build a majority. He also noted that President Nicușor Dan might intervene by September 1st to resolve the impasse.

Economically, former Government Secretary General Radu Oprea warned that foreign direct investment in Romania plummeted by over 80% in the first half of 2026, attributing the loss of investor confidence to recent political rhetoric.

Simultaneously, Simina Tănăsescu, President of the Constitutional Court (CCR), addressed controversy surrounding her meeting with Bolojan. She denied any link to ongoing court cases, stating the meeting focused solely on the institution's acute lack of office space. However, PSD deputy Adrian Câciu accused the meeting of violating the Unique Register of Interest Transparency (RUTI) law.
