Mexico President Sheinbaum doubles high school capacity goal to 400,000 places
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has announced a major expansion of the country's high school system, doubling the administration's target from 200,000 to 400,000 new student places during her current term. The announcement was made during the inauguration of the Centro de Bachillerato Tecnológico Agropecuario (CBTA) No. 330 in Texcoco, Estado de México. This new facility represents a 50 million peso investment and is designed to accommodate 1,080 students across two shifts, offering specializations in cybersecurity, livestock production, and agricultural production.
The expansion is part of a broader educational strategy that includes the "Bachillerato Nacional" model, which allows students to earn dual certifications: a General Baccalaureate for university preparation and a Technological Baccalaureate for technical recognition.
Additionally, the President detailed the "Plan Oriente" for the State of Mexico, a regional development initiative targeting 10 million residents across 11 municipalities. The plan aims to ensure that every municipality in the region has at least one high school and one university (either Rosario Castellanos or Benito Juárez), alongside improvements to water, drainage, and health infrastructure.
