Construction workers hold protests over unpaid wages in Italy
Construction workers in Italy have staged high-altitude protests to demand unpaid wages at different job sites.
In Porto San Giorgio, two workers climbed a crane at the former Miramare construction site to protest unpaid salaries. The demonstration lasted approximately four hours, involving local authorities, the fire brigade, and the mayor, before the workers safely descended around 1:00 PM.
In Torricella Sicura, near Teramo, approximately ten workers climbed scaffolding to demand roughly 7,000 euros each in arrears. The workers accused a subcontractor based in Modugno of failing to pay wages and allegedly dismissing staff without their knowledge. The situation was resolved following negotiations involving the Filca Cisl union and law enforcement. The main contracting company, Casa Attiva, issued immediate payments of 2,000 euros per worker and proposed hiring the workforce directly to bypass future intermediaries.
