Italian construction worker wage protests
Overview
Construction workers in Italy staged high-altitude protests at various job sites to demand unpaid wages. In Porto San Giorgio, two workers climbed a crane at the former Miramare site for approximately four hours before descending safely following intervention by local authorities and the fire brigade.
In Torricella Sicura, near Teramo, approximately ten workers climbed scaffolding to demand roughly 7,000 euros each in arrears. The workers accused a subcontractor from Modugno of failing to pay wages and allegedly dismissing staff without their knowledge. The standoff concluded after negotiations involving the Filca Cisl union and law enforcement. The main contracting company, Casa Attiva, provided an immediate advance of 2,000 euros to each worker and proposed direct hiring to prevent future subcontracting issues. Investigations into the subcontractor’s business practices are ongoing.
