Consumer advocates warn of fake online shops posing as closing family businesses
Consumer protection agencies in Germany, specifically the Verbraucherzentrale Niedersachsen, are warning against a sophisticated online fraud scheme involving fake webshops. These fraudulent sites pose as regional, long-standing family businesses that are purportedly closing down after many years of operation.
To create a sense of urgency and trust, the shops use emotional storytelling and offer massive discounts of up to 80 percent. Examples of suspicious domains include ‘anna-berlin.de’, ‘mathilde-muenchen.de’, and ‘emma-frankfurt.de’. However, instead of high-quality traditional goods, customers often receive low-quality merchandise. Furthermore, high return shipping costs frequently render the legal right of withdrawal ineffective.
Legal expert Kathrin Bartsch notes that the pattern is consistent: emotional staging is used to build trust and encourage rapid purchases. Investigators have found that while these shops claim local roots, their actual business headquarters are often located in distant regions such as Wyoming or Hong Kong. Consumers are advised to check the imprint at the bottom of websites and use the consumer protection agencies' fake shop finder to verify URLs.
