Consumer agencies in Mexico and Paraguay report surge in complaints
Mexico’s consumer protection office, Profeco, recorded approximately 2,500 complaints so far in 2026, marking a near‑10% increase over the same period last year. Director Miguel Ángel Moreno Muñoz said the rise is linked to upcoming high‑traffic periods such as Back to School, the Buen Fin sales event and the holiday season. The most frequent complaints involve automotive agencies, travel agencies, and service providers like carpenters and blacksmiths, especially regarding cancellations, refunds and service non‑fulfillment.
Paraguay’s consumer authority, SEDECO, reported that between January and June it received nearly 10,000 inquiries and more than 4,500 formal complaints, a 136% jump in inquiries and a 57% rise in complaints compared with the same half‑year in 2025. Financial services and insurance dominate the complaints at 19% of the total, followed by telecommunications (12%), household appliances and electronics (11%), automotive (6%) and transport (5%). The agency highlighted abusive collection practices, misleading advertising and poor service quality as the main drivers of consumer discontent.
