Consumer protection authorities launch inspections in Hungary and Romania

Consumer protection authorities in Hungary and Romania are intensifying inspections and implementing stricter regulations regarding commercial practices, warranties, and environmental claims.

In Hungary, the National Trade and Consumer Protection Authority has launched a nationwide inspection series. Officials are focusing on three primary areas: new durable consumer goods, repair and maintenance services, and mandatory warranties for newly constructed residential buildings. The crackdown follows previous findings where 67 percent of investigated cases resulted in violations, leading to 94 million forints in fines. Common issues include failure to provide mandatory warranty certificates and providing misleading information regarding consumer rights.

In Romania, new regulations implemented in late September prohibit vague environmental claims. Retailers can no longer label products as ‘eco’, ‘green’, or ‘environmentally friendly’ without verifiable proof of exceptional environmental performance. The National Authority for Consumer Protection (ANPC) is also targeting misleading practices related to product durability, repairability, and software updates. New requirements mandate that merchants clearly communicate legal warranty details, including those for digital content and services.
