Hungary consumer protection market inspections

Overview

Hungarian consumer protection authorities, guided by the National Authority for Consumer Protection and Trade (NKFH), have initiated several inspection campaigns to ensure market compliance and transparency.

In late September 2026, authorities launched inspections targeting Black Friday sales to prevent misleading commercial practices. Regulators are monitoring both physical and online retailers to ensure price transparency, specifically verifying that advertised discounts are calculated based on the lowest price applied during the preceding 30 days. Previous data indicated infringement rates of 23 percent in traditional stores and approximately 14 percent in the online sector.

Concurrently, the NKFH has directed inspections regarding energy efficiency labeling for electronic devices, including smartphones, tablets, televisions, and monitors. These checks aim to ensure that retailers provide accurate information according to the EU-standardized A-to-G energy scale. This follows prior enforcement actions where inspections of refrigerators and freezers revealed violation rates of 33 percent in traditional stores and 63 percent among online retailers. The current oversight includes verifying the presence, placement, and content requirements of energy labels and the accuracy of product data sheets across retail stores and internet advertisements.

Expanding the scope of enforcement, the NKFH has launched a nationwide inspection series focusing on three primary areas: new durable consumer goods, repair and maintenance services, and mandatory warranties for newly constructed residential buildings. This crackdown follows previous findings where 67 percent of investigated cases resulted in violations, leading to 94 million forints in fines. Common issues identified include the failure to provide mandatory warranty certificates and the provision of misleading information regarding consumer rights.
