Continente and Pingo Doce dominate Portuguese grocery market
In the first half of the year, the Portuguese food retail market remains dominated by Sonae and Jerónimo Martins, which together control 50% of the market share. Continente maintains its leadership position with a 27.6% market share, though this represents a slight decrease from 27.9% in the previous year. Pingo Doce has narrowed the gap with the leader, increasing its share from 21.4% to 22.3%.
Lidl recorded the highest growth among major retailers, rising from 12.5% to 13.8% and solidifying its third-place position. Conversely, Mercadona experienced its first decline in market share, dropping slightly from 7.5% to 7.4%. Other notable shifts include Auchan+Minipreço, which saw a significant decrease from 6.4% to 5.5%.
Data from Worldpanel by Numerator indicates that Continente remains the most widely used brand, with 87.5% of Portuguese households shopping there during the period. While Pingo Doce gained ground through customer loyalty and promotions, Lidl's growth is characterized by increased shopping intensity and a wider variety of manufacturer brands on its shelves.
