Diabetes technology research shows mortality benefits of CGM
At the 62nd European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) Congress in Milan, new data highlighted the clinical benefits and challenges of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) for type 2 diabetes patients.
Research presented by Abbott Laboratories involving nearly 28,000 adults in the United States suggests that CGM use is associated with a significantly lower risk of mortality. Specifically, the study found a 44% reduction in death risk after 12 months and a 36% reduction after 24 months for those using basal insulin. The data also indicated a reduction in cardiovascular complications and hospitalizations for heart failure.
Additionally, the Dexcom State of Type 2 Report, based on a survey of 800 healthcare professionals and 2,500 patients across eight countries, noted that CGM improves treatment adherence and helps patients understand the impact of lifestyle choices. However, the report also identified barriers to widespread adoption, including inconsistent technological knowledge and regional disparities in access to these devices.
