Continuous glucose monitoring in diabetes management
Overview
Discussions regarding continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) technology for diabetes management have focused on both clinical efficacy and healthcare accessibility.
In Greece, the National Organization for the Provision of Health Services (EOPYY) and the Panhellenic Federation of Diabetes Associations (POSSASDIA) have entered negotiations to facilitate CGM reimbursement for Type 2 diabetes patients undergoing intensive insulin therapy. While the scope of coverage remains dependent on Ministry of Health funding, officials aim to finalize negotiations by the end of autumn to begin reimbursements in the new year. POSSASDIA has also requested increased supplies of testing strips for Type 1 diabetes patients using CGM.
Clinical research continues to underscore the benefits of CGM. At the 62nd European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) Congress in Milan, new data presented by Abbott Laboratories involving nearly 28,000 adults in the United States suggested that CGM use is associated with a significantly lower risk of mortality. The study reported a 44% reduction in death risk after 12 months and a 36% reduction after 24 months for those using basal insulin, alongside a reduction in cardiovascular complications and hospitalizations for heart failure.
Furthermore, the Dexcom State of Type 2 Report, surveying healthcare professionals and patients across eight countries, noted that CGM improves treatment adherence and helps patients understand the impact of lifestyle choices. Despite these advancements, barriers to widespread adoption persist, including regional disparities in access and inconsistent technological knowledge among users and providers.
