Contract teachers threaten strike over recruitment delays
Approximately 4,500 former communal contract teachers are threatening to continue strike actions due to delays in regularizing their professional status. Moussa Diakité, the national first vice-president of the contract teachers' union, expressed concern regarding the slow processing of their files, noting that the teachers are already biometrically registered and experienced in classroom practice.
A primary concern for the group is the upcoming August 17, 2026, deadline for the two-month processing period. The union has called for inclusive dialogue with the new Minister of Education, Bintou Keita, urging her to address perceived injustices and avoid the recruitment errors of previous operations. The union has indicated that teachers will not return to classrooms until the situation is resolved.
