Ghana teacher service condition disputes

The Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETERG) has issued an ultimatum to the government, demanding the resolution of outstanding service conditions by the end of August. The association warned that failure to meet these demands could lead to industrial action.

Key demands include the implementation of a 20% deprived-area allowance to incentivize teachers working in underserved and hard-to-reach communities. The association is also seeking an increase in the Continuous Professional Development (CPD) allowance from GH¢1,200 to GH¢2,000 annually, alongside the restoration of book, research, and rural allowances, and the provision of laptops.

Furthermore, PRETERG is calling for the government to address significant delays in the promotion process for qualified teachers, specifically regarding transitions from Deputy Director levels to Director levels. National President King Ali Awudu noted that the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission has delayed implementing directives intended to facilitate these career advancements.
