Kahramanmaraş Penta Park collapse trial sentences two to 15 years

The Kahramanmaraş 2nd Heavy Penal Court delivered its verdict in the Penta Park Sitesi case, in which the 6 February 2023 earthquakes caused the collapse of the complex’s 1st and 3rd blocks and the death of 115 people, with ten injured. Contractor Mesut Başkır and static‑project engineer Özcan Çakmak were each sentenced to 15 years 6 months 20 days imprisonment for "conscious negligence causing multiple deaths and injuries." The court also ordered the continued detention of Başkır and the arrest of Çakmak.

Six former municipal officials faced dismissal of their cases on grounds of the statute of limitations, fifteen co‑defendants were acquitted, and six other charges were dropped. Başkır had previously been captured while attempting to flee to Greece after the disaster.
