Turkey earthquake collapse trials continue

Overview

Since early June 2026 Turkish courts have moved from indictments to sentencing in a series of criminal cases linked to the February 2023 earthquakes. The Malatya 1st Heavy Penal Court handed 12 years 6 months to contractor Bahattin Doğan and designer Bülent Yeroğlu and 17 years 6 months to owners Engin Aslan and Sefa Gülfırat for illegal renovations that caused the Trend Garden Rezidans collapse. The Adana 1st Heavy Penal Court issued comparable terms.

On 2 July the Kahramanmaraş 5th Heavy Penal Court sentenced contractor Tevfik Tepebaşı to 17 years 4 months for the Ebrar Sitesi G‑Block disaster, while municipal officials Hacı Mehmet Güner and Fahri Yiğitoğlu received 6 years 8 months each for negligent homicide. The same day a hearing on the auxiliary building of the Hatay Education and Research Hospital was postponed to 17 November, with expert reports ordered and judicial control maintained over the former regional health director.

The Kahramanmaraş 2nd Heavy Penal Court on 13 July delivered its verdict in the Penta Park case: contractor Mesut Başkır and static‑project engineer Özcan Çakmak were each sentenced to 15 years 6 months 20 days for conscious negligence causing multiple deaths and injuries. The court ordered Başkır’s continued detention and Çakmak’s arrest, dismissed six former municipal officials’ cases on statute‑of‑limitations grounds, dropped six additional charges, and acquitted fifteen co‑defendants. Başkır had previously been captured while attempting to flee to Greece.

Prosecutors continue to seek cumulative sentences of 700–876 years for the main accused, citing intentional homicide, intentional injury and negligent homicide.
