Contran regulates use of drug detection device for drivers
The National Traffic Council (Contran) has regulated the use of a device known as a ‘drogômetro’ through Resolution No. 1.031/2026. This device is capable of identifying the presence of psychoactive substances in a driver's system using a saliva sample.
Unlike a breathalyzer, the device can detect substances such as cocaine, marijuana, amphetamines, MDMA, heroin, LSD, fentanyl, and methamphetamine. While the technology is already authorized for use in ‘Lei Seca’ (Dry Law) operations, its application has not yet been widely implemented.
The National Transit Secretariat (Senatran) addressed concerns regarding patients using continuous medication, stating that antidepressants and anxiolytics do not trigger the device unless they contain substances on the detection panel. Senatran emphasized that driving aptitude while on medication remains a matter of medical evaluation and adherence to professional guidance.
