COP31 in Antalya raises Cyprus diplomatic tensions

The upcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP31), hosted by Turkey in Antalya, has raised diplomatic questions regarding the participation of leaders from Cyprus. Both the President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), Tufan Erhürman, and the leader of the Greek Cypriot Administration, Nikos Christodulidis, are expected to attend.

While President Erhürman was invited directly by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Christodulidis was invited through an European Union initiative rather than by the Turkish presidency. This distinction has led to debates over diplomatic protocol and the recognition of the two administrations. Christodulidis has characterized the invitation as a diplomatic success.

The Republican People's Party (CHP) Foreign Policy Board also addressed the situation, noting that the invitation of the Greek Cypriot administration to COP31 creates uncertainty regarding the implementation of Turkey's Cyprus policy.
