EU and Turkey to hold high-level meeting in October regarding Cyprus

Cyprus President Nikos Hristodulidis has announced that a high-level meeting between the European Union and Turkey is scheduled to take place within October. The meeting, requested by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, aims to establish the necessary conditions for restarting negotiations regarding the Cyprus issue and to discuss potential progress in EU-Turkey relations.

Hristodulidis emphasized that any advancement in EU-Turkey relations is directly linked to the resumption of Cyprus talks within the previously agreed framework. He also noted the upcoming arrival of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy to Cyprus in late October, which may facilitate positive developments. Furthermore, the appointment of Raffaele Fitto as the EU Special Representative for Cyprus is viewed as a significant step in the EU’s approach to the matter.

In response to recent diplomatic exchanges, Turkish Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş rejected claims made by Greek Cypriot representatives, asserting that no solution is possible if the Turkish community is ignored. Kurtulmuş characterized the 1963 disruption of the legitimate government as a coup by Greek nationalists rather than a Turkish invasion, maintaining that the Turkish side remains an equal stakeholder on the island.
