Copanello fire in Italy contained after swift rescue effort saves homes

On the afternoon of July 20, a large fire erupted in the Copanello area of Stalettì, Calabria, Italy. High temperatures and strong winds helped the flames spread rapidly across the territory, reaching inhabited zones and threatening public infrastructure, including the municipal water‑treatment plant.

The local police detected the blaze early, raised the alarm and mobilised the fire service. Firefighters, supported by aerial Canadair aircraft and ground crews, contained the fire and prevented a larger disaster. Municipal officials, including assessors Francesco Pellegrino and technical manager Antonio Ferrarelli, thanked the responders and began damage assessments and restoration work on the treatment plant.
