Coparmex calls for media regulations to protect freedom of expression

The Confederation of Employers of the Mexican Republic (Coparmex) has called for clear regulations regarding audience rights to ensure they do not undermine freedom of expression or editorial autonomy. During a forum at the Chamber of Deputies, the business organization argued that while strengthening audience guarantees is necessary, such measures should not allow authorities to intervene in content decisions.

Coparmex warned against the risk of administrative authorities having the power to determine what constitutes true or acceptable information. The organization expressed concern that subjective criteria for sanctions could lead to self-censorship and discourage investigative journalism. They requested precise, objective, and verifiable definitions for terms such as “veracity” and “false information” to ensure legal certainty and prevent direct or indirect censorship.
