Mexico press freedom crackdown widens

In late July 2026 the Mexican government expanded control over political discourse. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s daily briefing singled out journalists, and a proposed “Law of Audiences Rights” was criticised as a shield for the administration. Opposition lawmakers denounced a draft censorship law and an INE resolution that ordered PRI senators to delete social‑media posts. Critics warned the “Ley Censura” would force media to separate news from opinion, create audience‑defender roles, impose ethics codes and give a regulator power to judge content. On 31 July the Instituto Nacional Electoral (INE) banned the term “narcopartido” for the ruling Morena party and ordered the PRI to remove posts by leader Alejandro Moreno Cárdenas and other accounts. Moreno called the move censorship; President‑elect Claudia Sheinbaum defended it as protecting truthful debate, while PAN and PRI figures warned it threatened freedom of expression. On 2 August PRI deputy Rubén Moreira Valdez said Morena asked the INE to review and possibly censor his social‑media accounts after he criticized the media‑regulation bill. The next day PAN leader Jorge Romero Herrera warned that Morena’s new “Lineamientos Generales para Garantizar los Derechos de las Audiencias” aims to control social media and silence criticism, describing it as an authoritarian route. PRI officials echoed the concern, and opposition leaders criticised Sheinbaum’s press conferences for targeting journalists. Both parties argue that granting the state authority to decide what can be published endangers democratic debate ahead of the 2027 elections. Also on 2 August the INE voted unanimously to require PRI national president Alejandro Moreno Cárdenas to delete nine of his social‑media posts that used terms such as “narcogobierno”, “narcopartido”, “narcopolíticos”, “narcodictadura”, “cártel de Morena” and “narcopropagandista”, citing potential false criminal accusations.
