Copenhagen pushes pilot for fast cyclists on road lanes while tackling tourist cycling safety

The Copenhagen City Council is considering a trial that would allow faster cyclists to use selected road lanes alongside cars, provided speeds are limited to 30 km/h. Proposed test sections include Nørrebrogade/Frederiksborggade, Vesterbrogade, Østerbrogade, Amagerbrogade, Torvegade and Gl. Kongevej. The initiative is backed by traffic‑safety experts such as Tove Hels of Aalborg University, who says the scheme could improve overall safety, and the city hopes to fund the pilot without involving the national transport ministry.

Separately, city officials Andreas Keil and Line Barfod have announced a meeting with the tourism organisation Wonderful Copenhagen, represented by Klaus Bondam, to address safety concerns raised by tourist cyclists. Bondam warned that a “cyclist licence” for visitors would be hard to enforce and called for continuous, multi‑channel communication and stricter rules for bike‑rental operators to reduce conflicts on Copenhagen’s bike lanes.
