Copenhagen cycling safety and speed limit proposals

Copenhagen officials are exploring new traffic regulations to enhance cycling safety and manage different speeds of road users. Initially, the City Council considered a pilot program to allow fast cyclists to use specific road lanes alongside cars, provided they adhere to a 30 km/h speed limit. This proposal included addressing safety concerns for tourist cyclists through potential stricter rules for rental operators and improved communication.

Following these discussions, the Mayor for Climate, Environment, and Technology, Line Barfod, proposed expanding the scope by reducing the speed limit to 30 km/h across most of the city. This broader initiative aims to protect vulnerable road users, such as children and the elderly, citing data that survival rates for collisions increase significantly at lower speeds. Implementing this city-wide change would require a national legislative amendment to increase municipal authority over local roads, a matter Barfod intends to discuss with the Transport Minister.
