Copper theft of public wiring rises in Brazil

The theft of public wiring and electrical cables is becoming a recurring issue in various Brazilian regions, driven by the high value of copper in the illegal market. In the Tatuapé district, specifically within Vila Gomes Cardim and Chácara Santo Antônio, thieves have targeted public wiring during the early morning hours, causing service interruptions for internet and cable TV providers.

In Santarém, residents report a growing trend of thieves targeting electrical installations, towers, and even cultural sites like the Casa da Memória, which recently closed due to repeated break-ins. These criminals often risk electrocution to steal metal for resale. To hide the origin of the stolen goods, cables are frequently burned or shredded before being sold at a significant discount compared to market prices.

In response to these activities, authorities are taking action. In the Greater São Paulo area, the Civil Police of Franco da Rocha recently seized half a ton of copper in Mairiporã, valued between R$ 15,000.00 and R$ 32,500.00. Additionally, local municipal chambers are advancing projects to crack down on irregular businesses that facilitate the receipt of stolen materials.
