Corfu: Five waterspouts form simultaneously off the coast

At least five waterspouts formed simultaneously off the coast of Corfu on the morning of Tuesday, September 22, 2026. The phenomenon was captured in photographs by Jon Wray and subsequently published by meteo.gr, the service of the National Observatory of Athens.

Waterspouts are vertical vortices that extend from the base of storm clouds to the water's surface. While they share similarities with tornadoes, their formation mechanisms can differ. Such phenomena are most common in tropical regions but can also occur in mid-latitudes.

The appearance of these waterspouts coincided with severe weather affecting the island of Corfu, characterized by heavy rainfall, lightning activity, and hail.
