Corinth, Greece fire ignites agricultural area, arson suspect detained

A large fire broke out on 30 June 2026 in the agricultural zone of Agios Dimitrios, municipality of Corinth, Greece. Strong winds accelerated the blaze, prompting the emergency services to issue two public alerts via the 112 number, warning residents of Filothei and Thymariona to evacuate.

Firefighting operations involved 65 firefighters, three helicopters, two fixed‑wing aircraft, four drones equipped with visual and thermal cameras, and additional ground units and volunteers. Water was supplied from the regional water authority. The fire primarily affected dry grass on about three stremmata of land and did not reach forested areas or homes.

Authorities released video evidence showing a 57‑year‑old woman approaching the field with a lighter or match and igniting the dry vegetation. She was taken to the investigative unit for arson crimes in Corinth, where she has been ordered to appear before a judge. The rapid response of firefighters and local residents helped bring the fire under control before it could cause broader damage.
