Corinthians lifetime council rule declared illegal by São Paulo court
A São Paulo judge has ruled that the rule granting lifetime tenure to council members at Corinthians is illegal. Judge Guilherme Augusto de Oliveira Barna, of the 4th Civil Court of the Tatuapé Regional Forum, issued the sentence citing the General Sports Law and the Civil Code to promote democratic management and periodic elections.
If the decision is upheld, the club's 100 lifetime council members will be treated the same as the other 200 members, meaning they will serve three-year terms and must undergo elections to remain in office. The lawsuit, filed by council member Peterson Ruan Aiello do Couto Ramos and club member Caio César Domingues de Almeida, also argued that this structure contributed to the club's debt, which exceeds R$ 2.7 billion.
The ruling also struck down a requirement that members must be associated with the club for five years before being eligible to vote or run for office. Corinthians has contested the ruling, arguing that its electoral rules and lifetime positions are historical decisions protected by the constitutional autonomy granted to sports entities. The effects of the sentence are currently suspended pending appeals to the Court of Justice of São Paulo.
