Corinthians governance disputes and financial crisis

The governance and administrative stability of the Corinthians football club face intensifying pressure due to severe financial deficits. For the first half of 2026, the club reported a R$ 246 million deficit, significantly exceeding the projected R$ 138 million. This shortfall is linked to non-recurring items, such as R$ 32.5 million in prize money for the 2025 Copa do Brasil and taxes from the acquisition of player Félix Torres. The club’s total debt is approximately R$ 2.8 billion.

Financial instability has led to increased pressure from creditors. The club Cuiabá has requested the CNRD to block Corinthians’ revenues following payment delays regarding the player Raniele. To address these issues, the club aims to generate approximately R$ 150 million through player sales. Turkish club Besiktas has expressed interest in midfielder Breno Bidon, with a potential offer between 18 and 20 million euros; while Bidon is a vital asset, financial instability may force a sale.

These challenges coincide with the upcoming 2027–2029 elections, scheduled for November 28, 2026, amid a Public Ministry civil inquiry into potential administrative irregularities. Furthermore, a new investigation by the São Paulo Public Ministry is examining whether a R$ 642 million debt for the Neo Química Arena might have been miscalculated, which could potentially mean the stadium is already paid off.
