Corn market strengthens as US crop conditions deteriorate

Corn has emerged as the strongest grain market, with Chicago futures rising 4% in a week. This surge is driven by deteriorating crop conditions in the United States, where USDA ratings for good-to-excellent corn fell to 57%, a three percentage point drop in one week.

Discrepancies in yield estimates have also fueled market concern. The annual Pro Farmer crop tour estimated US corn yields at 10.9 tonnes per hectare, significantly lower than the USDA's recent estimate of 11.3 tonnes per hectare.

Global agricultural outlooks remain volatile. In Europe, heat and drought have worsened the maize outlook, with the EU's crop monitoring service cutting average maize yields to 6.61 tonnes per hectare. Soybean and sunflower yields in the EU are also forecast to be below average. Meanwhile, India is facing its weakest monsoon since 2009, and Australian crop prospects remain divided between strong conditions in South Australia and vulnerability in Western Australia.
