Corn markets react to high US yields and soil management trends

Global corn markets are experiencing volatility following the USDA’s latest WASDE report, which predicts a massive US harvest. US corn production is expected to reach 407.3 million tons, potentially marking the second-largest harvest in the nation's history. This surge in supply, combined with high ending stocks and competition from Brazil, caused corn prices to drop significantly on the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT).

In contrast to the price collapse in the US, European markets on Euronext Paris have remained relatively stable due to tighter domestic supply caused by significant crop losses within the EU.

On the technical side of cultivation, agricultural experts at the Frechenrieden corn show highlighted the benefits of using diverse cover crops to prepare soil for the next season. Research presented by Deutsche Saatveredelung (DSV) indicates that high-diversity mixtures—specifically those containing twelve or more species—can improve soil structure, increase water retention by up to 11.5%, and boost corn yields by approximately 11%. These deep-rooting mixtures also help break up compacted soil layers and can provide up to 80 kg of nitrogen per hectare for subsequent crops.
