Cornwall Council rejects unification with Devon

Cornwall Council leader Leigh Frost has rejected proposals to unify with Devon under a shared mayoral authority. The decision follows news that Devon voters may elect a county mayor as early as September 2027.

David Thomas, leader of Torbay Council, urged Cornwall to join the movement, suggesting that failing to cooperate with Devon could result in missing opportunities for regional influence. He noted that Devon is already well-advanced in its administrative arrangements.

In response, Cllr Frost stated that Cornwall is pursuing its own Strategic Authority deal. She emphasized that the government recognizes Cornwall’s unique status, including its recognition as a Cornish national minority, and expressed confidence in the county's independent position.
