Corrientes sailor dies on fishing vessel Mar Esmeralda in Puerto Madryn
A 36‑year‑old sailor from the province of Corrientes, identified as Gustavo Ortiz, died of an acute cardiac decompensation while working aboard the high‑seas fishing vessel Mar Esmeralda, owned by Cabo Vírgenes. The ship entered the Almirante Storni terminal in Puerto Madryn, Chubut, on an urgent basis after the incident.
Prefectura Naval agents took statements from the crew, and a federal judge’s authorization is awaited to release the body for transport back to Corrientes. The maritime workers’ union SOMU, together with the company SEMAC, is coordinating the legal and logistical steps for the family. An autopsy performed at night is expected to confirm the natural cause of death.
The incident has prompted standard forensic procedures and the involvement of port authorities, but no criminal suspicion has been reported.
