Fatalities on Argentine fishing vessels

Overview

In late July 2026, a 36‑year‑old sailor from Corrientes died of acute cardiac decompensation aboard the high‑seas trawler Mar Esmeralda while it was docked at the Almirante Storni terminal in Puerto Madryn. Authorities took statements, awaited a judicial order to release the body, and an autopsy was scheduled to confirm the natural cause of death.

A few weeks later, in early August 2026, a 53‑year‑old crew member from Tucumán was found dead in his cabin on the shrimp‑fishing vessel Argenova XXII operating in Argentine waters. The captain reported the death, suspended fishing activities, and ordered the vessel to return to Puerto Madryn for investigation. Union representatives from SOMU were notified in both cases.

The two incidents, occurring within weeks of each other in the same port and involving the same maritime workers’ union, have drawn attention to safety concerns within Argentina’s coastal fishing fleet.
