Corsica placed under orange alert for intense thunderstorms
Corsica has been placed under orange weather alerts due to intense thunderstorm activity. Météo-France upgraded the warning level following forecasts of violent storm cells, particularly affecting the western coast and Cap Corse. Expected conditions include heavy rainfall of 40 to 50 mm, significant electrical activity, hail, and wind gusts ranging from 100 to 110 km/h, with occasional peaks reaching 130 km/h.
Recent weather events highlight the region's increasing vulnerability to climate risks. During a previous orange alert, approximately 1,360 people were moved to safety in Haute-Corse, and 450 agents were mobilized. While these recent episodes are less severe than the deadly 2022 derecho that caused five deaths and wind speeds exceeding 200 km/h, authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as storms move across the island toward Italy.
