Costa Rica advances waste management and food rescue initiatives
The Costa Rica Food Bank has launched its ‘Zero Waste + Sustainability’ campaign, aiming to recover 50 tons of edible food during October and November 2026. The initiative seeks to reduce commercial food waste and support vulnerable populations by implementing a circular economic model within the domestic food industry.
Separately, EBI Costa Rica is expanding its waste-to-energy operations at the Uruka Environmental Technology Park in San José. The facility converts biogas from decomposing organic waste into electricity, with a 170-kilowatt installed capacity. Under an agreement with Compañía Nacional de Fuerza y Luz (CNFL), surplus clean energy is fed into the national power grid, supporting the country's decarbonization goals.
