Food security and waste management initiatives in Latin Am

Overview

In Costa Rica and Mexico, various initiatives have been launched to address food insecurity and waste management. In Costa Rica, CoopeMontecillos donated 1,550 kilograms of meat to the Banco de Alimentos de Costa Rica as part of a campaign to support thousands of people through non-governmental organizations. The Costa Rica Food Bank has also introduced a ‘Zero Waste + Sustainability’ campaign, which aims to recover 50 tons of edible food to reduce commercial waste and assist vulnerable populations.

In Mexico, the ‘Alimenta 2026’ campaign was established in Monclova by Cáritas Región Siderúrgica and local authorities to collect non-perishable goods for families facing economic hardship.

Additionally, efforts in Costa Rica have expanded into waste-to-energy operations. At the Uruka Environmental Technology Park, EBI Costa Rica is converting biogas from organic waste into electricity, feeding surplus clean energy into the national power grid to support decarbonization goals.
