Costa Rica celebrates cultural heritage through art and Afro-descendant history
Costa Rica is hosting several cultural initiatives to celebrate its national identity and heritage. In Madrid, Spain, the Casa de Cantabria gallery will host the ‘Costa Rica en Madrid’ exhibition from September 1 to 15. Curated by Irene Antillón of the Merchart art collective, the showcase features 50 Costa Rican artists as part of a cultural diplomacy effort to present Central American contemporary art to an international audience.
Domestically, the country is observing the Day of the Black Person and Afro-Costa Rican Culture. This includes the broadcast of historical audiovisual productions such as ‘El negro en Costa Rica’ (1977) and ‘La región Atlántica de Costa Rica’ (1980) via Canal 13. Additionally, the ‘Orgullo y dignidad Afrodescendiente’ exhibition at the National Library highlights the history and contributions of the Afro-descendant population through photographs and documents.
As August 31 falls on a Monday in 2026, it marks the first time this holiday will be observed during the work week. Under Costa Rican labor law, the day is a non-mandatory paid holiday, meaning remuneration for employees depends on their specific contract and payment modality.
