Costa Rican cultural heritage and research initiatives
Overview
Costa Rica has engaged in various efforts to document and celebrate its national identity and cultural heritage.
In August 2026, the Ministry of Culture and Youth released the results of the 2026 National Culture Survey (ENC2026). This study, conducted with CID Gallup, represents the first national measurement of cultural practices and participation in nearly a decade. The survey utilized over 6,000 in-person interviews to analyze cultural habits and identify access gaps to inform government investment.
Simultaneously, the country has promoted its heritage through international and domestic initiatives. This includes the ‘Costa Rica en Madrid’ exhibition in Spain, featuring 50 contemporary artists, and domestic celebrations for the Day of the Black Person and Afro-Costa Rican Culture. The latter includes historical audiovisual broadcasts and an exhibition at the National Library titled ‘Orgullo y dignidad Afrodescendiente’ to highlight the contributions of the Afro-descendant population.
By late August 2026, the government expanded its focus toward physical preservation and national commemoration. The Ministry of Culture and Youth allocated ₡410 million to modernize the National Library in San José to improve structural safety and safeguard historical archives.
Cultural programming has continued with a Dominican Republic film cycle and celebrations for National Comic Book Day. Additionally, the nation is observing the Month of the Homeland with ceremonies marking the 178th anniversary of the Republic’s foundation.
