Costa Rica installs six biofactories to boost biological input production

The Costa Rican Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) has installed six new biofactories in the provinces of Cartago and San José. These facilities are designed to promote the production and use of bioinputs, which are biological products that support plant growth and development with low impact on human health.

The biofactories are located within three producer organizations—CoopeHorti Irazú R. L., Apacoop R. L., and the Cantonal Agricultural Center of Alvarado—as well as three agricultural extension agencies in Tierra Blanca, Dota, and León Cortés.

Supported by the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) with an investment of approximately ¢50 million, the project aims to benefit 2,035 producers. The initiative seeks to strengthen technical capacities for producing biofertilizers, biostimulants, and biocontrolers while reducing dependence on imported inputs as part of the National Network for Innovation and Production of Bioinputs.
