Costa Rican agricultural support and innovation

Overview

The Costa Rican Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) has implemented several initiatives to support the agricultural sector through infrastructure recovery and technological innovation.

Initial efforts focused on a ₡90 million investment to assist producers in the Huetar Caribe region following heavy rainfall. This included ₡31.8 million for strengthening agricultural activities in Matina, Siquirres, and Guácimo through the installation of dryers and supply deliveries, as well as ₡59 million for recovery efforts in the Pococí canton in coordination with the National Commission for Risk Prevention and Emergency Attention (CNE).

Subsequent developments saw the installation of six biofactories in the Cartago and San José provinces. Supported by an investment of approximately ¢50 million from the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), these facilities aim to benefit 2,035 producers by promoting the production of biofertilizers, biostimulants, and biocontrolers to reduce dependence on imported inputs.
