Costa Rica urges accelerated climate mitigation on World Environment Day

The Ministry of Environment and Energy (Minae) in Costa Rica called on the productive sector, citizens and public institutions to intensify mitigation actions against global warming on World Environment Day. Minister Mónica Navarro said the slogan “Now for the Climate” is an immediate obligation to safeguard water, energy and biodiversity for future generations. The ministry highlighted the country’s 98 % renewable electricity mix, protection of over 25 % of its land, and the need to address food‑security and forest‑fire risks linked to the El Niño phenomenon, which authorities have placed on green alert for several provinces. National meteorological forecasts project a 25‑50 % rainfall deficit and temperature rises of up to 2 °C in the second half of the year.

In parallel, Costa Rica’s Civic Parliaments and Civic Councils launched a nationwide dialogue on environmental challenges, seeking long‑term, inclusive agreements. The groups pledged to keep the “Parlamento” designation for citizen forums and called on a broad range of stakeholders—indigenous peoples, women, youth, private sector, academia and government—to contribute to a joint declaration guiding climate, biodiversity and sustainable mobility policies over the next decade.
