World Environment Day actions & Bucharest floods

Overview

In early June, environmental groups and governments in Turkey, Croatia, Bosnia‑Herzegovina, Serbia, Costa Rica and Romania marked World Environment Day with water‑resource management campaigns, renewable‑energy pledges, community clean‑ups and cross‑border river stewardship along the Danube. The initiatives emphasized emission‑reduction targets, eco‑education and a One‑Health approach to climate‑linked health risks.

At the end of June, record rainfall produced severe storms that flooded Bucharest and 20 Romanian counties, damaging almost 470 vehicles, toppling trees and disrupting power and transport networks. Emergency services answered roughly 1 950 calls, deploying thousands of firefighters, police and utility crews to pump water, clear debris and restore electricity, underscoring the vulnerability of infrastructure to extreme weather.

A second, more intense thunderstorm on the night of 30 June–1 July created flash floods, roof collapses and a fatality when a tree fell on a van in Ilfov. Authorities logged over 2 500 emergency calls, dispatched more than 30 fire trucks, 20 special‑purpose vehicles and dozens of pump trucks, and mobilised crews from 14 counties. Water was removed from hundreds of houses, courtyards, basements and streets; over 960 trees and dozens of utility poles were cleared; 456 vehicles were damaged; and power outages affected 16 counties. A red‑code weather alert was issued, followed by an orange‑code warning. Metro service at Piaţa Victoriei 2 was suspended and 32 STB bus lines were interrupted. Mayor Ciprian Ciucu described the event as “without precedent” while noting that the city’s infrastructure ultimately held up, highlighting the need for accelerated climate‑adaptation measures in Bucharest and surrounding areas.
